Glaciers and seals

These are from Glacier Bay's Johns Hopkins Glacier. It was a very foggy day but it put an interesting light on the environment.

Another Fine Day in Glacier Bay

This morning in Glacier Bay, Tidal Inlet, we saw 5 wolves and a mother coastal brown bear with her 2 cubs. The same 2 cubs from last week and the same wolves from 2 weeks ago, combined into one spectacular sight this week. It is my last day in Glacier Bay and I will miss it but had to post this asap.

Bears and a Wolf

Well, as if bears and wolves weren't enough separately - here they are together! We saw these bears, a mom and 2 cubs born this year, earlier today in Glacier Bay in Tidal Inlet. It wasn't until the bears were leaving the beach that I noticed the wolf hiding in the tall grass. Amazing!

They interacted a little, mostly the cubs chasing the wolf. The wolf did not seem to be bothered too much by it and just walked off into the woods.

Steller Sea Lions in Glacier Bay

These were taken the last time I was in Glacier Bay. This is at South Marble Island. This Steller sea lion colony is a bachelor colony of males that are past their prime or those who are not yet ready to compete for breeding rights with females. So they come here and fight with each other. These males weigh as much as 2200 pounds.

Petersburg

I am in Petersburg today. It is raining and it feels like fall is here. This is one of my favorite port stops in SE AK. I am sitting on the boat now in the lounge. More to come in the next couple of days as we will be whale watching again.

Young Whale Photo #3

Young Whale Photo #2

Young Whale

Wow, today (Monday, August 27) a young humpback was swimming with its mother. The young whale hung out around the boat for around 45 minutes while mom went off to feed. What an experience! After a while, mom surfaced and swam fast in a bee-line toward the boat to retrieve the young whale. Then around 10 minutes later, both of them swam toward the boat again and in 3 or 4 breaths, they dove and swam off. This young whale was probably born last winter. The photos say it all.

Wolves in Glacier Bay - Tidal Inlet

Well, I saw 5 wolves today in Glacier Bay, 2 females and 3 puppies. I have not seen wolves in the wild before today and felt truly privileged to be let into their world. It was as they say "awe inspiring." I will never forget this experience.

Chilkat River Moose

Today I took a Jet Boat ride on the Chilkat River and saw this young bull moose eating. Very cool, my first moose sighting in Alaska.
